Baduy community asks government to protect indigenous land

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SERANG -- Baduy, Indonesian traditional community living in the western part of Banten province asked provincial government to protect the integrity of indigenous land. The land covered an area of 5,136.8 hectares (ha) at Kanekes village, Lebak regency.

"We hope that government can protect and preserve the land, forests and mountain in our region. The damaged forests can lead to disasters, such as flood and landslide. We do not want if there are parties destroying our forests," Baudy community leader, Jaro Daenah in Serang recently.

The head of village explained that Baduy community already bought 850 ha of land purchased from outside community. It became the property of Baduy people who bought it, about 1-2 ha per person and it has been certified.

Vice Governor of Banten, Rano Karno promised to protect the indigenous land for next generations. He said that he always coordinated with local government of Lebak.
