REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Chairman of Gerindra party, Suhardi - number one candidate of electoral district of Yogyakarta - failed to get parliamentary seat in Jakarta. He was defeated by number four candidate, Andhika Pandu Puruguyaba, who collected about 78 thousand votes.
"It is because of enormous money politics, but I was not too bad in collecting 60 thousand votes for Gerindra party," Suhardi said on Monday as reported by Erik Purnama Putra.
According to Suhardi, the opened system that relies on majority votes makes anyone who has excess money can potentially qualify to be member of the House of Representative (DPR). He hopes that someday the current system can be revised. Thus, candidate who has good programs and missions can be a legislator.
Suhardi did not regret his defeat in legislative election on April 9, 2014. The professor of Faculty of Forestry in Gadjah Mada University said that he had run good works for the last three years in community. He also appreciated his rival, Andhika Pandu Puruguyaba, a 31 year old candidate who gained large voters.
Chairman of the Assembly (MPR), Sidarto Danusubroto also criticized the opened system, which often eliminated the qualified candidate. With current rule, candidates who have popularity and lots of money can take the control at the House. Several MPR and DPR's leaders, such as Marzuki Alie, Priyo Budi Santoso, Taufik Kurniawan, Hajriyanto Thohari and Melani Leimena Suharli are almost certainly excluded from parliament in this year election.
