Landslide forces 10 families to flee homes in S Kalimantan

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TANJUNG -- A landslide triggered by massive rainfall forced 10 families in the Panaan village in South Kalimantan province to flee from their homes.

Following a monitoring exercise carried out in the affected area, it was found that 10 families that had suffered due to the landslide, have left behind their damaged houses and fled, head of mitigation, rescue and rehabilitation section of the Tabalong office of National Unity and Community Protection (Kesbanglinmas) Darwin said here on Thursday.

He said the Tabalong district social welfare and tourism office, helped by the Tanjung 1008 district military command and Kesbanglimas, has set up a public kitchen.

"We have informed the South Kalimantan provincial disaster mitigation agency about the landslide. Hopefully, the agency will send its officials to the location," he said.

As of now, a total of 130 families live in the landslide affected area that also has a number of public facilities, including a state elementary school building, a mosque and a market.

He said the families should be rehabilitated in other areas to avoid any casualties in the case of a similar natural calamity.

Penaan village is located in a forest area.
