REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANJARMASIN -- National Awakening Party (PKB) supported former Vice President, Jusuf Kalla to become presidential candidate of the party. Previously, the party has two figures of candidates, namely Rhoma Irama (the self-styled king of dangdut music) and Mahfud MD (Former Constitutional Court chief justice).
"The cadres are not satisfied if there are only two candidates. It would be nice if Jusuf Kalla participate," PKB chairman Muhaimin Iskandar said on Thursday.
Iskandar understood the aspirations. Moreover, he saw that Kalla had a good track record as national leader. Kalla is a figure that has the color of Nahdatul Ulama (NU), the country's largest Muslim organization.
NU has close ties to PKB, although it goes one step further than the party on the role of Islam in government. Kalla is also loved by Indonesian citizens. Therefore, Iskandar supported Kalla as presidential candidate.
