E-enfocement to help promote road safety

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The road traffic technology innovation by applying electronic or automated traffic enforcement (e-enforcement) techniques will help promote road safety and reduce traffic accidents, an official said.

"The e-enforcement application and traffic technology innovation must be realized for the road traffic safety," Head of the Transportation Ministry's Research and Development Department Elly A Sinaga said in a statement on Sunday.

Indonesia has the largest number of motorcycles in the world and around 70 percent of the country's road traffic accidents involved motorcycles.

The e-enforcement techniques will encourage motor bikers to be more disciplined and facilitate traffic monitoring by police.

The ministry is currently developing electric bicycles having a speed of 40 km per hour, she said.

Meanwhile, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono flanked by First Lady Any Yudhoyono launched a National Traffic Safety Pioneering Movement at Hotel Indonesia roundabout here on Sunday morning.

In his speech he called on all community components to participate in the movement with regard to preventing or minimally reducing traffic accidents in the country in view of the number of deaths caused by them.

"Let us be serious in our efforts to prevent or reduce significantly traffic accidents. All are responsible and must be involved and take efforts," he said.

The event was also attended by vice president Boediono and wife Mrs Herawati Boediono and other high ranking officials.

National police chief General Sutarman meanwhile said in his speech that the World Health Organization has launched a decade of road safety in view of the high rate of road accidents.

The United Nations has designated he World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims in the third week of every November, and a Decade of Action for Road Safety, 2011-2020, with the target of saving 5 million lives.
