BKPM: Japan dominates investment in Indonesia in 2013

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Japan still dominated investment in Indonesia in 2013 worth 4.7 million USD compared to 2.5 million USD in previous year. They invested mostly in three main sectors consist of automotive, electronic and energy.

"Japan is the main investor here, the followed by Singapore," Head of Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Mahendra Siregar said on Tuesday.

All major brands of automotive sector came from Japan, Europe and United States. US invested 2.4 million USD in Indonesia, followed by South Korea (2.2 million USD) and United Kingdom (1.1 million USD).

Fifteen Japanese companies are ready to invest in Indonesia in one to 1.5 years ahead. Among them is Toshiba, an electronics company, to invest 3.5 billion IDR.

Their commitment to invest in Indonesia occurred during President Bambang Yudhoyono's visit to Japan in December last year. 

He met Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and some representatives of Japanese companies to discuss their investment in Indonesia. Mahendra said that the value would be disbursed by the end of 2014.

There are several companies that have received investment licenses this year. Six out of 15 companies are automotive companies and manufacturers of motor vehicle spare parts. Three companies are operating in mineral sectors, namely, oil, gas and mining. Two more companies are electronic companies, including Toshiba.
