Train passengers increase 25 percent

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PURWOKERTO - Number of passengers during year end holidays increased 25 percent compared to last year, signaling the increasing public interest to use train. Public Relation Manager of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) in Purwokerto, Surono said that the increase exceeded KAI's estimation.

"We only estimated the number would increase three percent," Surono said on Monday.

During 17 days on December 20, 2013 to January 5, 2013, number of passengers departed from Purworejo station reached 5,143,203 passengers. It consisted of 94,819 passengers (66 percent) of economy class, 21,995 passengers (15 percent) of business class and 12,042 passengers (8 percent) of executive class. About 14,327 passengers or 10 percent of them were local passengers. 

There are six stations in the region that accomodate large number of passengers, namely Kutoarjo, Purwokerto, Kroya, Maos, Gombong and Kebumen station.
