Jokowi to Ban Masked Monkey Show in Jakarta

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Jakarta Provincial Government will buy back all monkeys which are used as animal show known as topeng monyet in the capital. Governor of Jakarta, Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo will set free all the monkeys to Ragunan Zoo, South Jakarta.

"We will buy all monkeys which are used as animal performers in Jakarta and put them into Ragunan Zoo. It will be completed this week," Jokowi said on Monday.

This week, Jokowi will search locations of monkey's distribution in Jakarta. He said that masked monkey was an international issue as well as a local issue such as disrupting traffic in Jakarta as it usually performed at intersection.

Masked monkey show harms monkey physically and can spread diseases to humans, such as rabies. Jakarta Provincial Government will also teach the street buskers to find their new jobs.
