Ministry of Forestry to open 600 FMUs

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA - Indonesian Ministry of Forestry will open 600 Forest Management Units (FMUs) funded by Forest Investment Program (FIP), an investment scheme from a number of donor countries. FIP is also conducted in Laos, Bazil, Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Laos, Mexico and Peru. 

Expert staff of Ministry of Forestry, IB Putera Parthama said developed countries would provide fund worth 70 million USD for carbon absorption through some forest activities in Indonesia including development of 600 FMUs.

"It is a big job. Not all of our forests are divided into unit such as Perhutani (state owned forestry company), especially outside Java. These 600 FMUs will use the fund to manage our forests," Parthama said recently.

Yogyakarta and Bali are two provinces proved to be successful in developing FMUs. FMU in Yogyakarta has developed superior quality teakwood plants.

The fund is consist of 50 percent grant and 50 percent soft loan granted by private sectors related to program. Parthama said beside formed 600 FMUs, government would use this fund for some other forest management activities in Indonesia.
