REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Authorities said unidentified gunmen had killed two police officers near Indonesia's capital, days after security forces made multiple arrests and killed suspects in anti-terrorism raids.

"There has been a shooting incident at 9.30 pm with Second Brigadier Maulana and Second Adjunct Inspector Kus Hendratma from the Pondok Aren police sector as its victims," Jakarta Metropolitan Police spokesman Senior Commissioner Rikwanto said on Saturday.

He said Second Adjunct Inspector Kus Hendratma (first victim) was on the way to attend a roll call at Pondok Aren police sector when two men on a Mio scooter rode close to him and suddenly shot him. He was hit on the back of his head and fell. A car carrying some police officers who happened to be behind Hendratma then chased the two men and hit their motorbike.

The riders then got off of the motorbike and shot the driver (Chief Brigadier Maulana, second victim) who just got out of the car and died on the scene, Rikwanto said. A shootout happened but the attackers managed to flee using a motorbike they snatched from someone nearby and went towards Pamulang area.

Rikwanto said a witness said one of the attackers was wounded and another one carried a pistol. It was the second attack against police in less than two weeks.
