REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Deputy Secretary General of Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI), Tengku Zulkarnaen disagreed over the use of quranic ringtone for mobile phone.

"We should not allow the use of quranic ringtone because the phone can ring anyywhere. The owner might carry the mobile phone in pocket when he or she is in the toilet. Verses of quran and also God's name can not be mentioned in the toilet," Zulkarnaen said recently.

MUI also worried if verses of quran would be heard anywhere, included place that was not appropriate,  then it could lead to negative immage of Islam. While in principle, a string of verses from Quran should be maintained and understood its meaning.

MUI also said another problem was incomplete quran verse used in ringtone because it would change the whole meaning of the verse. The organization then suggested that Muslims better chose Islamic song for their ringtone instead of quranic verse.
