REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BIAK - Thousands of Papuan Muslims commemorated Isra Miraj (the Night Visit and Ascension) in Biak on Thursday morning. The event was held in the Grand Mosque of Baiturrahman.
Muslims believes that Isra Miraj is a celebration of Prophet Muhammad PBUH’s journey from Mecca to Madina and his ascent into heaven. It is observed every 27th day of Rajab, the seventh month in the Islamic calendar.
"Through the celebration of Isra Miraj, Muslim can gain enlightenment values to be able to practice religion in daily life. We hope to deepen our faith and devotion to Allah (God in Arabic)," Chairman of Committee for Islamic Holy Days (PHBI) in Papua, Andi Firman Madjadi said on Thursday.
Isra Miraj can be a momentum to encourage the spirit of Muslim in practicing God's command to pray five times a day and night. An Islamic teacher, Usep Badruzzaman said Prophet Muhammad received the command to pray five times which today Muslim still held.
"The command to make the five daily prayers always makes a Muslim close to Allah. Because of it, Isra Miraj is expected to deepen the value of faith and people can practice it in their own life," Badruzzaman said.
A part of the celebration, PHBI of Biak Numfor organized Muslim fashion contest, young preacher contest, orderly prayer and also azan (calling for prayer) competition for students from kindergarten to junior high school.
