President sacks Aceng Fikri

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono signed the sacking of a head of distric, Aceng Fikri, whose marriage sparked controversy and was reported in some major newspapers abroad. 

"The letter has been signed (by the President) today," Minister of Internal Affairs Gamawan Fauzi, confirmed on Wednesday.  

Earlier, House of Representative of Garut (DPRD) submitted their proposal to sack Fikri, the head of district of Garut. The Supreme Court later decided that the proposal was valid in legal term. The process was continued and the letter officially submitted to the president's office. After the president's approval, now Fikri case was at the hand of Governor if West Java, Ahmad Heryawan.   

On Thursday, Fauzi said that Fikri could appeal the president's decision. "it's his rights," he said. But the minister explained that the impeachment of Fikri was final since the process had involved te Supreme Court as the highest legal authority in Indonesia. 

 

Divorce via text

Fikri's marriage became controversy when he divorced his young bride via text massagge. The man (40 years) claimed his young bride Fani Oktara was not a virgin, as she had claimed. Oktara denied it and in turn accused Fikri spreading baseless accusations against her. 

The issue has drawn attentions as many major media companies reported it abroad, including CNN, the Huffington Post, the Guardian, BBC, Herald Sun, the Province (Vancouver), and others.
