REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Experts from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and Japan are introducing Bawomataluo Village in South Nias to the world. The village is expected to be recognized by the UNESCO as a world heritage as the village is famous for jumping stone tradition.

The observer of Nias Cultural Conservation, Etis Nehe, said such recognition would protect cultural value in Bawomataluo, while more people would be invited to conserve the culture.

"By becoming world heritage, not only local and central government but also the international community are also responsible to be involved to conserve Bawomataluo," he said on Monday.

The Head of Expert Team from UGM, Yoyok Wahyu Subroto, said the team and a Japanese researcher, Prof. Yasufumi Uekita, would  introduce the site to the world. He will also invite several inhabitants of Bawomataluo to capture the most interesting part of the village.

"We will analyze the objects. Its is important to arrange Bawomataluo Village as tourism object in the near future," he said.

UNESCO has put Bawomataluo Village in its tentative lists since 2009. Bawomataluo Settlement has the potential to be nominated as a world heritage because it meets several criteria. 

The site represents a masterpiece of human genious and creativity. The settlement is an outstanding example of a type of building architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates a significant stage in human history.  The village is also directly or tangibly associated with events or living traditions, with ideas, or with beliefs, with artistic and literary works of outstanding universal significance.
