REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - A cone-shaped rice dish called Nasi Tumpeng is chosen as the icon of Indonesian traditional food. This is the first step to develop Indonesian culinary products.

"The icon is chosen after a long process and involving some stakeholders," Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Mari Elka Pangestu, said on Friday.

Nasi Tumpeng is commonly featured in Javanese traditional ceremony. The rice is usually yellow rice served with side dishes, such as vegetables, fish, and meat.

The team -consists of culinary experts and practitioners- picked Nasi Tumpeng as it has visually attractive presentation and flavor. People can also easily make Nasi Tumpeng while they are abroad. Nasi Tumpeng also has strong Indonesian philosophy and represents Indonesian culture in food.

Besides Nasi Tumpeng, there are 29 other culinary products chosen as the icons. The team firstly listed all traditional Indonesian food. They shortlisted the list based on the basic ingredients of the food and its popularity. The basic ingredients must be easily obtained even though people are abroad.

"We need to support this step so that Indonesian food will be internationally famous," Pangestu said.

The 30 icons are Nasi Tumpeng, Ayam Panggang Bumbu Rujak Yogyakarta, Gado-Gado Jakarta, Nasi Goreng Kampung, Serabi Bandung, Sarikayo Minangkabau, Es Dawet Ayu Banjarnegara, Urap Sayuran Yogyakarta, Sayur Nangka Kapau, Lunpia Semarang, Nagasari Yogyakarta, Kue Lumpur Jakarta, Soto Ayam Lamongan, Rawon Surabaya, Asinan Jakarta, Sate Ayam Madura, Sate Maranggi Purwakarta, Klappertaart Manado, Tahu Telur Surabaya, Sate Lilit Bali, Rendang Padang, Orak-Arik Buncis Solo, Pindang Patin Palembang, Nasi Liwet Solo, Es Bir Pletok Jakarta, Kolak Pisang Ubi Bandung, Ayam Goreng Lengkuas Bandung, Laksa Bogor, Kunyit Asam Solo, and Asam Padeh Tongkol Padang
