Halal Industry Could Boost Economic Growth of 8 Percent

Halal economy could boost Indonesia's GDP by 5.1 billion US dollars.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Head of the Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH) Ahmad Haikal Hasan is optimistic that the halal industry will be one of the main pillars in boosting the achievement of the 8 percent economic growth target set by President Prabowo Subianto.

“With the great potential of our halal ecosystem, I am optimistic that our halal industry will play an important role in spurring the achievement of the national economic growth target of 8 percent by 2028-2029,” said BPJPH Head Ahmad Haikal Hasan in Jakarta on Thursday.

Based on Indonesia Halal Markets Report 2021/2022, it said, the halal economy can increase Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP) by 5.1 billion US dollars or about Rp 72.9 trillion per year through export and investment opportunities. In addition, Indonesia is also the largest halal consumer market in the world with about 230 million Muslims.

BPJPH continues to strive to strengthen the ecosystem of the halal industry, one of them through mandatory halal certification programs from upstream to downstream. Various strategic efforts were made including through strengthening regulation, education, socialization, facilitation, information technology innovation and digitalization, to strengthening synergies and collaboration between various halal related stakeholders.

“Today, many of our MSME products are able to compete and even penetrate the export market after bagging halal certificates. This is in line with the mandate of Law No. 33 of 2014, that halal certification is not only for the protection of the consumer society, but also provides economic added value for entrepreneurs in producing and trading their products,” Babe Haikal continued with her relatives.

In fact, data shows that Indonesia recorded exports of halal products worth 41.42 billion US dollars, or equivalent to Rp 673.90 trillion, for the period from January to October 2024. In the same period, Indonesia's halal products trade surplus reached 29.09 billion US dollars.

Strengthening the halal industry ecosystem is also sure to strengthen Indonesia's role in the global halal economy, resulting in increased demand for halal goods and services.

The Board of Trustees of Asy-Shafi'iyah Halal Center Dailami Firdaus, expressed its commitment to support the government in training competent human resources (HR) in the field of halal product assurance. “We will continue to help the government score quality human resources in this sector and support Indonesia's grand vision of becoming the world's halal hub,” Dailami said.

In the inauguration of the Asy-Shafi'iyah Halal Center (AHC), BPJPH and the Islamic University of Asy-Shafi'iyah also signed strategic cooperation in the development of education, literacy, publication, socialization, and community service in the field of halal product assurance.
