Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu draws a red line on a graphic of a bomb as he addresses the 67th United Nations General Assembly at the U.N. headquarters in New York September 27, 2012. Netanyahu drew his "red line" for Iran's nuclear program on Thursday despite a U.S. refusal to set an ultimatum, saying Tehran will be on the brink of a nuclear weapon in less than a year.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesia will continue to support calls for the resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue through peaceful dialog, according to Minister of Foreign Affairs Marty Natalegawa. According to an IAEA report, Marty added, the Iranian nuclear issue was technical in nature and therefore IAEA was the appropriate forum to discuss the problem.

"Confidence-building measures should be implemented through dialog, under the framework of IAEA, for a peaceful and sustainable resolution of the issue," he stated during a meeting with the Commission-I of the House of Representatives (DPR) on Wednesday.

"We support the right of every country to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. However, we also want Iran to respect the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons," he said. "Indonesia continues to encourage Iran and other key countries, the permanent members of the UN Security Council, to hold peaceful dialog on the nuclear issue."

According to Marty, it is necessary for Iran to cooperate with the international community under the framework of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), "particularly with regard to the issue of transparency so it is not posed as a problem at the United Nations".

Earlier, Western countries accused Iran of developing nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear programme. Iran rejected the claims, stating that its nuclear program was meant for peaceful purposes.
