REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Salt import is halted temporary amid the decreasing price at farmer level due to abundance of supply. Instead, the importers are asked to buy local salt product and halt their import at least until the end of harvest season in November.

The price of salt is decreasing heavily in farmer's level. The average price of salt this year was lower than that of last year, Sodikin, said.

"We are obliged to sell it in whatever price," a salt farmer in Madura, Jakfar Sodikin, said on Tuesday and added that the price now was lower compared to the previous year.

The Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sharif Cicip Sutardjo has asked the salt importers to stop the import until November and prefer to local product. "If they are supposed to import 1,000 tonnes of salt, then they must buy local salt at the same quantity," he said.

Sutardjo also expects the farmers to improve their salt quality as the buyers also play a role in determining the price. The ministry keeps trains the farmers and targets them to produce 1.3 million tonnes of salt.
