Industries to absorb 1.4 million tons of salt from farmer

The national salt demand in 2018 is estimated to be at 4.5 million tons.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Ten salt-processing industries have expressed their committed to absorb salt, which is produced by 105 farmers in the country. They have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the absorption of salt from farmers.

"I appreciate the industries and salt farmers for their contributions to Indonesia, especially in supporting the national industry and food security," Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto stated here on Thursday.

Hartarto added that the national salt demand in 2018 is estimated to be at 4.5 million tons, consisting of 3.7 million tons for industrial needs and 800 thousand tons for consumption.

Meanwhile, the Director General of Industry, Chemical, Textile and Multifarious Industries (IKTA) at the Ministry of Industry, Achmad Sigit Dwiwahjono, remarked that the 10 industries that signed the MoU will absorb 1,430,000 tons of salt from farmers.

The salt farmers who signed the MoU are from various regions in Indonesia, including from Java, Sulawesi, and Nusa Tenggara.

Salt from West Java comes from farmers in Cirebon, Indramayu, and Karawang, while in Central Java, the industries will absorb salt from farmers in Demak, Jepara, Rembang, and Pati.

The industry will also get salt supply from several areas in East Java, including Sumenep, Pamekasan, Sampang, Bangkalan, and Surabaya. In South Sulawesi, the industries will get salt supplies from farmers in Takalar and Jeneponto.

In East Nusa Tenggara and West Nusa Tenggara, salt is obtained from Bima, Nagakep, and Kupang areas.

Meanwhile, the 10 salt processing industries are Sumatraco Langgeng Makmur, Susanti Megah, Budiono Madura Bangun Persada, Niaga Garam Cemerlang, Unichem Candi Indonesia, Cheetam Garam Indonesia, Saltindo Perkasa, Kusuma Tirta Perkasa, Garindo Sejahtera Abadi, and Garsindo Anugerah Sejahtera.
