Pertamina to do electricity business

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - After revising its budget in July 19, Pertamina through Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) plans to have business in electricity "Pertamina will not only focus on oil and gas but also develops renewable energy sources such as geothermal for electricity," the Vice President for Corporate Communication in Pertamina, Ali Mudakir, said on Thursday.

Pertamina plans to develop renewable energy sources in a long term, with the development of geothermal energy as the current priority. The state owned enterprise, he said, also planned to use excess power in each refinery to be converted into electricity. He gave an example, the excess gas from refinery could be used to build power plant in the location. Pertamina will soon create a new structure to manage electricity, namely gas and power division headed by a senior vice president. The new division will also handle Pertamina's new renewable energy.

Besides geothermal energy, pertamina will develop solar cell energy marked by the signing of memorandum of understanding with PT LEN. The cooperation is aimed to realize an integrated solar photovoltaic (PV) industry as a commitment to improve renewable energy development.
