REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Local residents of Cidahu, Sukabumi, West Java have found the second black box of Sukhoi Superjet 100 on Wednesday around 12.00 pm local time. A group of nine found the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) in the crash site in Salak Mountain, Bogor, West Java.

"The local inhabitants have found the FDR. When it was discovered, the FDR was buried in a location around 20 metres from the plane`s tail," said National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) Chief, Vice Marshal Daryatmoko, at Halim Perdanakusuma, East Jakarta, on Thursday.

The FDR, which is part of the plane`s black box, was discovered by nine Cijeruk residents at noon on Wednesday; they later handed it over to the joint SAR team represented by Colonel AM Putranto of the Suryakencana Military Command 061.

Takes one year to analysis

The Basarnas chief handed over the FDR to the head of the National Committee for Transportation Safety (KNKT), Tatang Kurniadi. "Extracting data can take about three to four hours, but it takes a lot more time to analysis," Kurniadi explained and he expected the data in FDR was still in good condition, as shown from the outer package.

It is unlike the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) which found in burnt out condition but the data was still good. Kurniadi predicted, the full analysis could take four to 12 months. “The black box can survive even burnt out in high temperature such as 1,300 to 1,500 centigrade,” he added.

Kurnadi explained, the downloaded data for FDR would be converted into numbers and graphic. The data will explain about the plane’s altitude, speed, including its maneuver. The data then will be combined with VDR’s data.

The Russian-made SSJ-100 was on a demonstration flight with 45 people on board - eight Russians, 35 Indonesians, one Frenchman and one American - when it crashed into Mount Salak in Bogor District, West Java, on May 9, 2012. All 45 passengers were killed in the plane crash.

The SSJ-100`s Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR), which is also part of the black box, was found earlier on May 15, 2012. Members of a joint team comprising the army`s Kopassus special force and the Indonesia Rock Climbing Federation discovered the CVR at the site of the crash.
