REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesian fugitives cannot flee to Malaysia anymore and vice versa due to the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the cooperation to arrest the fugitives crossing the border of both countries. The MoU is signed by the Indonesian Attorney General, Basrief Arief, and Malaysian Attorney General, Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail, in Jakarta on Monday.

“I guarantee if Indonesia send us a request, we will do it,” Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail said on Monday. He added that Malaysia would not protect Indonesian fugitive fleeing to the country.

Indonesian Attorney General, Basrief Arief, said the technical cooperation of fugitive capture would be discussed later. Indonesia and Malaysia also have the agreement on ASEAN MLA (Mutual Legal Assistance), in which one of them is the agreement of capturing fugitive.

“We follow up the law problems bilaterally. We also should ask for Malaysian help through Malaysian Attorney General,” Arief said.

After the signing, both countries will follow up and hold joint committee meeting on cross-border matters.
