REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALEMBANG - An Islam Holy Book called Alquran Al Akbar, steals people’s attention. Not only is it the biggest in the world, but also unique since the Quran is carved in wood.

The length of this Quran is 177 cms. The width is 144 cms with 2.5 cms thickness. It contains the whole genuine Quran of 30 sections. Alquran Al Akbar is shown in a three-story limas house (Palembang traditional house -ed).

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) gave his appreciation when he initiated it recently. Holding a conference in Palembang, the delegations of the Parliamentary Union of Organization of Islamic Conference (PUIC) also visited this Quran.

The delegations are from Niger, Tunis, Morocco, Jordan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, and Palestine. They agreed, Al Akbar is the biggest Alquran in the world.

“We appreciate what has been presented by Muslim, especially in Indonesia,” Sade Umar Abubakar, delegation from Niger, said. He added it was a historical and special masterpiece introduced at the time of conference. He found Alquran Al Akbar was the beautiful and picturesque art.

The first Alquran carved in wood becomes the history of Islam and maybe the only one in the world. “I am impressed with the idea. It is amazing,” he said.

Bayle Jjusa Sulaeman, delegation from Uganda, said, the masterpiece has to be appreciated. “We should be grateful. The writing looks very beautiful,” Sulaeman said.

Alquran Al Akbar needs a long time to be done. “The process of the making was started in 2002,” Syowatillah Mohzaib, a member of Indonesian parliament, said. Before shown in IGM Al-Ihsaniyah boarding school, Alquran Al Akbar was displayed in the third story of Masjid Agung Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin.
