REPUBLIKA.CO.ID,

PALEMBANG - The 7th conference of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (PUIC) discussed overseas placement of migrant workers. Representatives from Indonesian parliament proposed the topic to be discussed at the January 24-31 conference.

South Sumatra Governor, Alex Noerdin who hosted the official dinner of the PUIC delegates, said that in the future Indonesia would only send migrant workers to Islamic countries with laws that guarantee the safety and welfare of migrant workers. The ill treatment towards migrant labors is among subjects of concern at the meeting. Indonesia is a country that often sends migrant workers abroad and occasionally the placement is done without clear legal protection.
