REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MAMUJU -- An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale shook part of West Sulawesi province on Friday night. It caused panic to residents of Mamuju district.
The epicenter of the quake which struck at 09.09 p.m. local time was located 18 kilometers northwest of Mamasa district at a depth of 10 kilometers, chief of observation and information section of the Majene Meteorology Station Murthiuddin said.
The quake prompted patients and visitors at Mitra Manakarra Hospital at Pongkitu street in Mamuju district to stay outdoors.
"We were afraid as the tremor was quite strong and lasted for a few minutes. I took my relative who was being treated out of the hospital to avoid an unexpected thing," a local resident said.
There was no immediate report of casualties or material damage.
Also on Friday, an earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter Scale hit Nabire in Papua Province at 10.54 p.m. local time, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported. So far, there were no reports of deaths or damage to property from the local officials.
The epicentre was situated at 3.68 degrees south latitude and 135.53 degrees east longitude, or 35 kilometres southeast of Nabire District, at a depth of 11 kilometres.
On Tuesday, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake had jolted East Flores District, East Nusa Tenggara Province, at 01:24 am local time, BMKG reported.
"The epicentre was situated at 7.17 degrees south latitude and 123.27 degrees east longitude. As its magnitude was mild, the tremor would not trigger a tsunami," the agency said in a statement.
The quake occurred 636 kilometres under the sea, about 131 km off the district¿s northeast coast. Neither the agency nor the East Flores Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD) had received any reports of death or damage.
