Ramadhan brings them some fortune

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BEKASI - Ramadhan or fasting month brings fortune for certain people who do for a living in cemetery as the number of pilgrims increasing sharply. Among them are flower vendor and cemetery guard, both are working in informal sector.

"I get around 200,000 IDR to 500,000 IDR per day since a week before Ramadhan," said Suyati (51 years), a flower vendor in Pereng I Cemetery in Bekasi, West Java. 

While in regular day, she only gets about 50,000 IDR a day. With additional profit during Ramadhan, now she could pay the school fee of her three children.

The number of pilgrim is always increasing every Ramadhan and Eid al-Fitr. Yanto, a man who guards the cemetery, says the number of pilgrims in Ramadhan was 200 – 1,000 a day. Yanto also receives some additional tip from the pilgrims. They often give him some tip of 20,000 IDR to 50,000 IDR for his service by cleaning the tomb. "In a day, I can get 500,000 IDR for cleaning the tombs and leading a pray," he said.
