REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Setara Institute's Deputy Executive Director Bonar Tigor Naipospos stated that the appointment of Commissioner General Badrodin Haiti as the new national police chief is just to maintain leadership in the police.

"The appointment of Commissioner General Badrodin Haiti is to give the police a leader. However, Badrodin will not have much space to lead the police," Bonar Tigor Naipospos said here on Friday.

Bonar assessed that the House of Representatives did not have the choice of canceling his inauguration. The House had to agree on the appointment.

According to him, it is more realistic than the question of Budi Gunawaan's cancellation as police chief candidate.

"There is also an agreement to make Budi Gunawan deputy chief. Moreover, Badrodin has been carrying out his duty as police chief for one year. So, there is a great opportunity for Budi Gunawan to be nominated as deputy police chief," he added.

However, he noted, Badrodin cannot carry out any reformation of the police force internally, as some strategic positions in the police are occupied by the supporters of Budi Gunawan.

Earlier, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo installed General Badrodin Haiti as National Police chief at the State Palace here Friday.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Vice-President Jusuf M. Kalla, several lawmakers, ministers, and the chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), among others.

During yesterday's plenary session led by Deputy Speaker Fadli Zon in Parliament, the House of Representatives (DPR) approved the appointment of Commissioner General Badrodin Haiti as the new national police chief.

All DPR members present during the meeting unanimously agreed to name Haiti as the national police chief.

At the meeting, Chairman of the House's Commission III, Aziz Syamsuddin, elaborated on the process of the fit-and-proper test conducted on the police chief candidate.

He revealed that the process began with President Jokowi's letter on Haiti's nomination as national police chief candidate being read out at a House plenary session on March 23, 2015.

Following Haiti's nomination, Aziz explained that the House Commission III conducted a hearing with the KPK and the Financial Transactions Analysis and Reporting Center.

It also held a hearing with the National Police Commission on April 14 apart from receiving inputs from the University of Indonesia's Students' Council on April 15 and visiting Haiti's residence.
