Indonesia develops agricultural technology to face climate change

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The Agricultural Ministry is developing technological innovations such as an Integrated Cultivation Calendar to deal with the impact of climate change.

"Development of innovations is a strategic way to act in anticipation of climate change and to maintain food self-sufficiency," Advisor to the Minister of Agriculture for Environment, Mukti Sardjono, said here on Thursday.

He explained that the calendar is aimed at anticipating variations in climate. It can be accessed by anybody, including farmers and stakeholders, at local and national levels.

Mukti underlined that climate change should be managed through real action to improve production and maintain sustainable food self-sufficiency.

The ministry has resolved several problems related to food self-sufficiency in rice, corn and soybean by improving irrigation system, introducing fertilizer subsidy, providing seeds and counseling.

"These have had positive impacts on cultivation and production," Mukti added.

He observed that that some of the indirect impacts of climate change have been degradation of agricultural lands and failure of agricultural production.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNCCC) in June 2014 in Berlin said during the last 10 years, the earth's temperature has been increasing and is very different from that 30 years ago.

Likewise, the 21st meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP21) in Paris mentioned that climate change was happening and the world's temperatures were continuing to soar.
