BNPB: Latest Data 166 Deaths Due to Disaster in North Sumatra

The largest impact was recorded in Sibolga City, Central and South Tapanuli.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- BNPB stated that the number of victims died as a result of flash floods and landslides in North Sumatra increased. A total of 166 died as of Saturday (29/11/2025). Meanwhile another 143 people are still declared missing and are under search.

The head of the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) Suharyanto said Sunday (30/11/2025), that the increase in the number of victims comes as search and rescue (SAR) operations by a joint Basarnasa-led team have intensified since the establishment of emergency response status this week. “In one day this increased to 60 fatalities thanks to a joint team search operation,” he said.

BNPB confirmed that the greatest impact was recorded in Tapanuli Tengah, South Tapanuli, and Sibolga City districts. In addition to casualties, refugees also reportedly reached thousands of heads of families, scattered in South Tapanuli, Sibolga, Mandailing Natal, North Tapanuli, and Humbang Hasundutan.

“The logging process is still ongoing in tandem with the 24-hour SAR operation,” he said.

Suharyanto also said the fulfillment of the basic needs of refugees, the opening of access to isolated areas, and the acceleration of logistics distribution is constantly intensified.

BNPB stationed five relief helicopters at Silangit Airport to maximize aid distribution to Central Tapanuli, Mandailing Natal, and other hard-to-penetrate areas. Military helicopters AD Bell 412EPI, MI-17V5, private helicopters and Cessna Caravan aircraft are also operated.
