KA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Assembly (MUI) for Fatwa Prof KH Asrorun Niam appealed to the people who are conducting demonstrations not to carried out looting. The appeal was made by Asrorun following the large number of mass demonstrations that committed such unlawful acts.
He called on the community to refrain from anarchic acts, vandalism, destruction of public facilities, as well as looting and unjust taking of other people's property.
“The delivery of aspirations, even in situations of anger, should not be followed by anarchism, looting and/or theft of other people's property, because it is contrary to religious law and statutory provisions,” Asrorun said in a statement in Jakarta, Sunday (August 31, 2025).
He also called on the mobs who had taken looted goods to be returned to the authorities so that it would not become a case of law. “For the masses who take, store, and/or seize the goods unjustly, to return them immediately to the owner or to the authorities, so that there are no legal problems in the future,” he said.
He also appealed to the public, in particular public figures to implement a modest lifestyle and not flaunt their wealth.
“In the midst of a poor socio-economic and socio-political situation, gaps that are still high, officials and the public are supposed to promote a simple lifestyle, build social solidarity, promote a spirit of social solidarity, and avoid flexing, luxury lifestyles and hedonism, even if only for content,” he said.
