REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian government's plan, through the Ministry of Defense (Kemenhan), to purchase Chengdu J-10 fighter jets from China appears to be becoming a reality. This development follows a meeting between Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Indonesia’s Ambassador to China, Djauhari Oratmangun, at the Ministry of Defense office in Central Jakarta, Wednesday (May 28, 2025).
Sjafrie stated that he spoke with Ambassador Djauhari to discuss a number of strategic issues, including accelerating food self-sufficiency, modernizing Indonesia’s military equipment (alutsista), and developing the national defense pharmaceutical industry. “We also discussed the readiness to send Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) pilots to China for J-10 fighter jet training, as well as evaluating defense equipment production facilities,” said Sjafrie via his Instagram account, quoted in Jakarta on Friday (May 30, 2025).
After drawing public attention, the post was edited and the part mentioning the deployment of Indonesian Air Force pilots to China for J-10 training was removed. However, screenshots of Sjafrie’s original statement had already spread widely on social media.
