REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian government decided to pursue negotiation efforts in the face of the reciprocal tariff policy of the United States (US).
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said that instead of applying reciprocal tariffs, the Indonesian Government chose to use a strategy of diplomacy in search of a mutually beneficial solution for the two countries.
“We were given a very short period of time, which is April 9, to respond. Indonesia prepared an action plan with regard to several things, including imports and investments from the United States,” Airlangga said at the Advanced Limited Coordination Meeting on the United States' Reciprocal Tariff Policy held virtually in Jakarta on Sunday.
The approach is taken taking into account the long-term interests of bilateral trade relations, as well as to maintain the investment climate and the stability of the national economy.
On the other hand, the Government is also looking at the potential impact of tariff policies on a number of labour-intensive export-oriented industrial sectors, such as the apparel and footwear industries.
These sectors are considered vulnerable to global market fluctuations, so the Government is committed to continuing to provide support through a range of targeted incentives to maintain competitiveness and business continuity.
The United States reciprocal tariffs will take effect from April 9, 2025.
