REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Chairman of the Sharia Economic Society (MES) Erick Thohir said it is impossible for the government to build an economy without the foundations of its financial system.
“As the Chairman of MES at that time, I always said that it is impossible for us to build an economy, but there is no foundation of the financial system,” Erick said while speaking at the National Labor Musyarawah (Mukernas) IV of the Indonesian Ulama Assembly (MUI) in Jakarta, Tuesday (17/12/2024).
In 2019, according to him, Indonesia does not have many large sharia banks. Because, according to him, at that time his sharia finances had not been friendly to his economic activities.
“How do we want to try, but the financial sharia is not friendly, it is not friendly to its economic activities. Well, that's why the thinking at that time we should improve the financial sharia,” he said.
After that, he continued, then Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) was born, consolidated from state-owned banks such as BNI, BRI, Mandiri Syariah into a large bank.
“And when the time was consolidated, there were also many questions that were said when we think about the Sharia economy, indeed, we are the most numerous people in Indonesia,” said Erick, who was greeted with applause and shouts of Allahu Akbar from the participants of MUI Mukernas.
