REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto appointed former coordinating minister of tourism and investment (menko marves) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan as Chairman of the National Economic Council of the White Red Cabinet for the period 2024—2029 at Istana Merdeka, Central Jakarta, Monday (21/10/2024).

The inauguration of the Chairman of the National Economic Council based on the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia Number 139/P of 2024 on the appointment of the Chairman of the National Economic Council is scheduled for October 20, 2024.

“In the name of the Lord High Esa, the President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto, since the inauguration, appointed Army General Purn Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan as Chairman of the National Economic Council,” reads the statement read by Deputy for Administration and Apparatus of the Ministry of State Secretary Nanik Purwanti.

Prior to his appointment as Chairman of the National Economic Council, Luhut had also served as the coordinating minister for political, legal, and security (menko polhukam) in 2015-2016 replacing Admiral (Purn) Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno. Luhut has also served as the president's chief of staff (KSP) in 2014-2015.

During his tenure as Menko Marves, Luhut had a strategic role in the fields of tourism as well as environment, toll infrastructure, fast trains, development of battery industry for electric vehicles, to actively being the government's liaison with foreign investors. Luhut has also played an important role during the Covid-19 pandemic in controlling the transmission of SARS-CoV-2.

Luhut is also known to the public as a figure who often recommends various solutions for the Jokowi-Ma'ruf government in responding to sensitive issues.
