Mount Merapi Erupted Launches Dozens of Lava

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- The Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Council (BPPTKG) reported that Mount Merapi launched dozens of lava falls over 36 hours on April 22-23, 2024. A lava fall slide reportedly leads to Kali Bebeng.

On April 22, BPPTKG recorded 22 lava falls coming out of Mount Merapi. “The maximum glide distance is 1,800 meters,” BPPTKG Head Agus Budi Santoso said on Tuesday (23/4/2024).

As for April 23, from 00.00 WIB to 12.00 WIB, four lava falls were recorded. Agus said that four lava falls led to Kali Bebeng, with a maximum glide distance of 1,300 meters.

The BPPTKG also recorded the volcanic activity of Mount Merapi. During 22 April there were reported 89 fall earthquakes, 59 many phase earthquakes, 13 shallow volcanic earthquakes. “There were also three low-frequency earthquakes and five tectonic quakes,” Agus said.

Meanwhile, on April 23, from 00:00pm to 12.00 pm, 29 fall earthquakes, 14 multi-phase earthquakes, two shallow volcanic earthquakes, and one distant tectonic earthquake were recorded. “At the moment Merapi's activity level is still at level 3 or on standby,” he said.

The potential hazards of Mount Merapi have so far been reported in the form of lava falls and fallout heat clouds (APG), especially in the south-southwest sector and the southeast sector.
