Police Arrests Man for Claiming to be Prophet

A video showing a man claiming to be a prophet contains SARA issues.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MEDAN -- Tebing Tinggi Resort Police arrested a man with the initials JK (35 years old) for spreading a video allegedly claiming himself to be a prophet. The case occured in Tebing Tinggi District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra.

“JK allegedly claimed to be a prophet and conveyed a narrative charged with issues relating to religion, race, tribe and between groups (SARA) or a certain religion,” said Head of Tebing Tinggi Police Station, Andreas Tampubolon, in Medan, Wednesday (20/3/2024).

Andreas continued that the perpetrator was a resident living in Letda Sujono Street, Bulian Village, Bajanis District, Tebing Tinggi City. “He was arrested by the officer for committing a criminal offense of Law Number 1 of 2024, the second amendment to Law Number 11 of 2008 on electronic transaction information,” the police chief said.

In addition, officers also secured a pulpit, tripod, cloak, paper containing narration and an android mobile phone that the perpetrator used at the time of making the video. Andreas said this incident happened on Tuesday (19/3/2024) around 15:00pm, when the perpetrator uploaded a video about SARA issues on his social media account with the account of "Nabi Jannes."

“The video, which is 1 minute 30 seconds long, shows him being at the golf course of Penonggol Village, Tebing Tinggi District, Serdang Bedagai Regency,” he said.

Subsequently, according to Andreas, the perpetrator read out a piece of paper that contains SARA issues and elements of hatred. The offender's post received negative comments and received condemnation from citizens. In addition, the video has also been shared by many people so that it worries the community.

Following up on the community's unrest, Andreas said he arrested the perpetrator the same day at the workshop, Jalan Belibis which is not far from his residence. “As to the motives of the perpetrators doing so are still under further investigation carried out by personnel,” he said.
