REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Member of Commission B of the Provincial Parliament of Jakarta, August Hamonangan, believes that urban farming can be an alternative to maintaining food security, especially ahead of the holy month of Ramadan in DKI Jakarta where land is already limited.

“We ask the Food, Marine and Agricultural Security Service (DKPKP) of Jakarta Province to strongly encourage people to use limited land for growing vegetables and fruits,” August told reporters in Jakarta on Tuesday (5/3/2024).

August said urban farming can be a productive activity done while at home. According to him, the concept of urban farming is to take advantage of the limited land around the house by growing fruit or vegetables in pots (tabulampot) using various unused containers.

“For household needs there are chili vegetables and so on can be done at home,” he said.

In addition, he also appreciated the move of the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta, which is resuming a program of cheap groceries to suppress the price of food commodities.

However, August appealed for the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government to implement a low-cost grocery program in a strategic location and able to reach all Jakarta residents in need.

“There should be places that are close to residents, well that can only be said to be effective,” he said.

The Provincial Government (Pemprov) of DKI Jakarta along with other parties have distributed about 4.3 million seedlings of productive crops in five areas of Jakarta and Kepulauan Seribu Regency.

The urban agriculture program in Jakarta has targeted 625 green alley spots spread across five areas of the city. The hundreds of green alley spots involved 18,700 people as activists.

Previously, the Food Security, Marine and Agriculture Department (KPKP) of DKI Jakarta promoted healthy food education for citizens aimed at providing an understanding of healthy and good food selection during Ramadan fasting.

“During worship, it is recommended to consume a lot of vegetables. Then, if you want to store vegetables, they should be stored in the refrigerator,” said Head of KPKP DKI Jakarta Suharini Eliawati in Jakarta on Monday.
