REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Lembaga Penajamin Simpanan (LPS) believes that the collapse of several Banks Perekonomian Rakyat (BPR) or rural banks does not have a significant impact on the national economy. Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of LPS Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa revealed that in the last 18 years, on average, there were 7 to 8 BPR bankruptcies each year.

"On average over the 18 years that we've seen it there are 6 to 7 average BPR falls, not banks, but BPR. At the beginning some were handed over to LPS and we handled it quickly and smoothly so there was no unrest in the community. The important thing is that community funds are replaced quickly,” Purbaya said during a press conference of the Financial System Stability Committee (KSSK) in Jakarta, Tuesday (30/1/2024).

In early 2024, Purbaya continued, there were already two BPR that went bankrupt, namely BPR Wijaya Kusuma on January 4, 2024 and BPRS Mojo Artho Kota on January 26, 2024. In the future, Purbaya also predicts that there are still other BPR that will go bankrupt.

Furthermore, Purbaya explained, the trend of bankruptcy of some BPR every year is not due to the weakening of Indonesia's economic conditions, but due to frequent fraud practices. As for the condition of the general bank to date, it is still recorded in solid condition.

BPRS Mojo Artho as the last BPRS to be recorded insolvent, has been through the process of payment of deposit guarantee claims and execution of liquidation by LPS.

Secretary of LPS Institution Dimas Yuliharto said that the process of payment of customer deposit guarantee claims and implementation of bank liquidation was carried out after the license of BPRS Mojo Artho Kota Mojokerto was revoked by the Financial Services Authority (OJK) since January 26, 2024.

“In order to pay the deposit guarantee claim of BPRS Mojo Artho Kota Mojokerto customers, LPS will ensure that the customer's deposits can be paid in accordance with the applicable conditions,” Dimas said.

In addition, LPS will conduct reconciliation and verification of deposit data and other information to establish deposits to be paid. The reconciliation and verification in question will be completed by the LPS no later than 90 working days from the date of revocation of the business license. Payment of customer funds will be made gradually during this period.
