REPUBLICA.CO.ID, RAMALLAH -- The Palestinians urged the United Nations to formally declare a famine in the Gaza Strip, which has been facing Israel's onslaught since October 7.
“International reports indicate widespread hunger among Palestinian families who go through their days without food. More than a million people in Gaza are starving,” the Palestinian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday (26/12/2023).
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres earlier said four of the five most starving people worldwide were in Gaza.
“About 1.9 million refugees are sheltering in shelters and experiencing severe hunger. As many as 50,000 pregnant women are also in the facility without water, medicine or health services,” the ministry said.
Israeli forces launched a massive military offensive in the Gaza Strip since a cross-border raid by Hamas October 7. As a result, at least 20,915 Palestinians, mostly women and children, died and 54,918 others were injured in the aggression, according to local health authorities.
Meanwhile, about 1,200 Israelis are believed to have been killed in Hamas attacks. Israel's intense offensive in Gaza caused destruction.
As much as 60 percent of the infrastructure in the enclave was damaged or destroyed. Nearly two million people are displaced amid a crisis of food, clean water and medicine.
