REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Vice President Ma'ruf Amin supports the establishment of a global women's ulema assembly. The existence of this assembly as an effort to provide space for women explores the potential to contribute to finding solutions to global issues, as well as supporting gender equality in accordance with Islamic sharia.

This was conveyed by Ma'ruf while receiving Egyptian female scholar Nahla Sabry El-Saidy at the Official Residence of the Vice President Jl. Diponegoro No. 2, Jakarta, Thursday (21/12/202).

Nahla, who currently serves as the Director of Markaz Tathwir (Al-Azhar Center for the Development of Students and Foreign Students), presented her thoughts in an international forum on the need for the establishment of a Global Women's Ulama Majlis, including in Indonesia.

“In Pakistan, such assemblies have been formed, I hope that in all Muslim-populated countries (including Indonesia) they will also form the same assembly, because each location has different problems,” Nahla was quoted as saying in a press release by BPMI Setwapres.

Although today many women have occupied important positions, Nahla said, many still do not understand the true concept of women in Islam. Because of this, he hopes there is a forum that supports equality that is unbiased and unjust.

“We expect this assembly of women who will map out and formulate a Muslim way of thinking that is compatible with Islam,” she said.

Ma'ruf also supports the formation of the Global Women's Assembly. However, he hopes Al-Azhar will initiate the concept and thinking, the rest will technically be done by the Indonesian side.

“I hope women understand the various issues. We must prepare great women who, in addition to religion, also understand economics. In fact we are focusing on the sharia sector of the economy. I want a lot of women who have a good understanding (about sharia economics),” Ma'ruf said.

On the occasion, Ma'ruf also expressed appreciation to Al-Azhar for rewarding him for his contributions grounding wasathiyyah Islam.

“I am very happy to receive an award from Shaykhul Al-Azhar about Islam wasathiyyah. (The award is given) directly from Sheikh Al-Azhar,” he said.

For information, Nahla Sabry El-Saidy was selected as the 50 most influential women in Egypt as she was judged to have made many outstanding contributions to the development of Al-Azhar's foreign students' learning process.

Nahla is the daughter of Al-Azhar cleric Sheikh Sabry Qutb El-Saidy. She was once appointed Vice Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Language for Women in Cairo and Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Sciences for Foreign Students in Nasr City in January 2019.

She was among the first women appointed by Al-Azhar in Egyptian history to this post. Nahla is a female cleric who opposes underage marriage and supports the passage of women without a mahram. He spawned many books, among them Adwa Al-Bayan, Al-Azhar in the past and present.
