REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Sa'id bin Amir's full name is Sa'id bin Amir bin Hudzaim Al-Jumahi Al-Qurasyi. Sa'id ibn Amir served as the regional chief or governor of the Himsh region, a region in Shame that came under the control of the caliphate of Umar bin Al Khattab.

At the time when Umar ibn Al Khattab made an official visit to Sham, he stopped at Himsh. Then Umar bin Al Khattab had his aides register the poor population of the region.

After it was recorded, it turned out that Sa'id bin Amir was one of the poor inhabitants. Though Sa'id ibn Amir was a governor in the region.

Seeing that reality, Umar ibn Al Khattab shed tears and gave Sa'id bin Amir 1,000 Dinars. When he took the money, Sa'id ibn Amir said, “Innalillahi wa inna ilaihirojiun.”

Sa'id ibn Amir's wife said, “What happened to you, my husband? Did Amirul Mukminin pass away?”

Sa'id ibn Amir replied, “Even the disaster is greater than that.”

His wife asked again, “So what happened to you?”

Sa'id ibn Amir replied, “The world has come to me and severe trials have come to me.”

After that, Sa'id ibn Amir took the money and distributed it to the poor fakirs. This story is based on the book The Great Figures of Islam Throughout History written by Shaykh Muhammad Sa'id Mursi.

At first, it was narrated that Umar ibn Al Khattab was once going to assign Sa'id bin Amir as governor of the Himsh region. However, Sa'id ibn Amir refused to be governor.

Then, Umar ibn Al Khattab said, “By Allah I will not let you refuse this task. If you take up the task of becoming caliph on my shoulders, then you let me work alone.”

Sa'id ibn Amir eventually agreed to become governor out of pity for Umar ibn Al Khattab.

Before leaving for Himsh, Umar ibn Al Khattab gave him provisions in the form of money. Then Said bin Amir's wife proposed that the money be invested.

His wife suggested that the money be used as capital to trade. But Sa'id ibn Amir went and arranged the money.

Whenever his wife asked about the money, Said bin Amir replied, “Our trading capital has grown quite rapidly and increased in it.”

Then Sa'id ibn Amir's wife found out that her husband had borrowed the money from one of his relatives.

To his wife Sa'id ibn Amir said, “There have been many of my friends who have preceded me before Allah. I don't want to stray out of their way. Even though I own the world and its standing.”

Eventually his wife relented over what Sa'id bin Amir did.
