JAKARTA — The Election Commission (KPU) has held a plenary meeting to draw and determine the sequence number of presidential candidates (capres) and vice presidential candidates (cawapres) for the 2024 Presidential Election. The forum has assigned the sequence numbers of Anies Rasyid Baswedan-Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar, Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD.
Sequence number 1 retrieved the Anies-Muhaimin pair. The couple was carried by Nasdem Party, PKB, PKS, and Ummat Party. Next, sequence number 2 is the Prabowo-Gibran pair. They are fielded by the Golkar Party, Gerindra Party, Democratic Party, PAN, PSI, Gelora Party, Garuda Party, and Prima Party. Last is the Ganjar-Mahfud pair which gets the sequence number 3. The pair were fielded by PDIP, PPP, Hanura Party, and Perindo Party.
“Establishing the sequence number of candidates for the general election of president and vice president in 2024 as listed in the annex to the decision is an integral part of this decision,” said KPU Chairman Hashim Asy'ari reading the results of the plenary meeting on Tuesday (14/11/2023) evening.
The Commission randomized the turn to revoke the sequence number of the capres-vice presidential pair. Commission Commissioner Idham Holik explained that the mechanism of drawing the election number of the presidential pairs was carried out in two stages. First, all three couples will take the queue number for the revocation of the sequence number. This queue numbering corresponds to the time of registration of presidential/vice presidential candidates carried out on 19 to 25 October 2023.
The couple who first signed up was Anies Baswedan-Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar. Second was the pair of Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD. Last was the Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka pairing. After they register the queue number, they only take the lottery number determining the sequence number of the presidential/vice presidential candidates couple.
Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar expressed their happiness over the sequence number determination released on Tuesday (14/11/2023) evening. “Today comes to an important stage, the election process begins with the determination of the sequence number for this evening. We are very happy and grateful that finally each of the vice-presidents has prepared themselves so well that at one stage they are committed to carrying out the elections with a joyful spirit,” Muhaimin Iskandar (Imin) said in his speech after the appointment of the sequence number.
Imin appreciated the entire presidential couple who went through the process of drawing serial numbers as an attempt to jointly fill the election process with ideas and ideals. According to him, each candidate has a track record and a vision to fight for.
“Today, my team reported that it was ready to participate in the competition in a healthy and sporty way. Amin considers that we have the opportunity to keep the elections taking place according to the principle of luber plus jurdil (direct, public, free, secret, honest, and fair, Red),” he said. Then, Imin revealed, the presidential race later was like a football game. He likened football to a general election competition.
“To the whole community, look, elections are like football competitions. We watched the teams of each campaign play sportively and openly so that people should enjoy the elections with joy and joy and togetherness, competing but family,” he said.
He also wanted, together with the other candidates to be sporty in competition. “If any player is cheating, please be yelled at. If there is a referee covering a player, we take a picture and spread it out. If there is a referee who cheats, we report to FIFA as the highest institution. If there is a player who is naughty, go viral,” he continued.
Candidate Prabowo Subianto congratulated Cak Imin when he made a speech at the drawing of the number of the presidential and vice presidential pairs at the Office of KPU RI. Cak Imin was previously Prabowo's coalition partner until he finally changed his bow to become vice presidential candidate of Anies Baswedan.
In his speech, Prabowo claimed to agree with Cak Imin's statement that there should be no fraud in the 2024 elections. According to Prabowo, fraudulent elections are tantamount to betraying the nation and people of Indonesia. “I also agree with the number 1 candidate (Anies-Imin), especially the one delivered by Gus Muhaimin, my old friend,” Prabowo said with a smile.
Prabowo then made a rhyming gesture. “One or two new jobs, three and four in development. If you get a new friend, don't forget the old friend,” said the general chairman of the Gerindra Party and was immediately greeted with boisterous cheers from hundreds of attendees.
Prabowo ended his speech by calling himself thankful the sequence numbering was tinged with an atmosphere of joy and familiarity. According to the Defense Minister, whoever wins the 2024 presidential election, all parties must unite to protect Indonesia.
As Prabowo and Gibran were about to leave the stage, it appeared Anies and Cak Imin walked to the front of the stage. Cak Imin looked directly at Prabowo and the two shook hands. Prabowo and Cak Imin's right hands met in the air. The two smiled.
Prabowo then came across Anies Baswedan. Gibran seemed to naturalize Anies and Cak Imin by bowing his body as a sign of respect. Then, Prabowo approached his supporters. The former comander of the Indonesian army elite team, Kopassus immediately danced before his supporters.
Ganjar said he was grateful to get sequence number 3. According to him, one of his side's wishes is in accordance with Pancasila's third precept, namely Indonesian Unity. “So, we got the number 3 right, in accordance with the third precept, 'Unity of Indonesia', we unite everything in an encouraging political process,” Ganjar said.
Because, he said, such unity is necessary amid the political conditions ahead of the 2024 presidential election. He pointed out that lately there has been a lot of “Korean Drama” that shouldn't have to happen and shouldn't be public discourse. The drama captured him along with Mahfud and his four constituent political parties. There are many voices from different elements of society conveying the unease towards democracy going on at the moment.
“It's the dramas that don't really need to happen. We capture what is becoming the unease of the atmosphere of the world that is emerging in society. There are religious figures, there are teachers of the nation, there are artists, there are cultures, there are friends of journalists, there are activists, there are student activists, and they are all voicing that unease,” he added.
According to him, it became his obligation to keep democracy and the constitution in line with the spirit of reform. In accordance with conscience, in particular in welcoming the national contestants on February 14, 2024.
“We are very confident that the Indonesian people are with us to maintain democracy in this country. Ladies and gentlemens, whom I respect very much, this democratic journey is sometimes straight, sometimes winding like a stream of water, but believe me, with that flowing water he will follow his inner direction,” Ganjar said.
