GAZA — An Indonesian hospital in Gaza, a symbol of Indonesians' solidarity with Palestinians, is reportedly under a state of emergency. The hospital's main electricity generator is out of order, although hundreds of victims of Israeli bombing in Jabalia refugee camp continue to arrive.

The main generator of the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza has been out of service since Wednesday night. The hospital's director, Dr Atef Al Kahlout, said secondary generators were on in some parts of the hospital.

For the rest, electromechanical systems throughout the hospital have ceased to function. Includes a ventilation system in the operating room, the facility's only oxygen station, and a morgue refrigerator. Fikri Rofiul Haq, a volunteer in Gaza with the NGO Mer-C, said on Wednesday that the hospital had just 48 hours to run out of fuel for generators.

The hospital has had to struggle with limited resources since Israel bombarded Gaza after a sudden Hamas attack on October 7. Doctors now have to treat the victims in corridors, sometimes using flashlights because the power goes out constantly. Supplies of medicines, paramedics' clothing, and other healthcare equipment are also dwindling.

“Many children and women were injured... The hospital hall was very crowded with patients waiting in line for medication or follow-up examinations by medical teams,” Fikri told the South China Morning Post on the Israeli bombing of the Jabalia refugee camp.

The Indonesian Hospital in Gaza is currently the backbone in providing health services in the northern part of Gaza. The building was the nearest medical facility that received hundreds of people wounded by two days of Israeli air strikes on the Jabalia camp. All the wounded were rushed to the only remaining operational hospital in northern Gaza.

Aljazeera reported that the large number of wounded forced the hospital to work 50 times beyond its capacity due to shortages of medical supplies and fuel. According to a statement made by the Ministry of Health, the hospital was forced to take a serious decision by shutting down the main generator due to extreme fuel shortages and relying only on a small generator underneath just to keep the ICU running.

In less than 24 hours, the number of victims of the first and second Israeli bombings in the Jabalia refugee camp has surpassed 1,000, according to the latest report published by the Gaza State Media Office. The number includes 195 confirmed dead, 120 people still missing, and at least 777 injured.

“We don't know until when this hospital will survive. At any time of the day, we can hear the announcement of a total closure of the hospital that would be a disaster. It will turn the hospital into a big morgue,” Algerian reporter Hani Mahmoud told reporters in Khan Younis, Gaza.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described Israel's attacks on Tuesday and Wednesday in Jabalia as “horrific”, while the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said the “disproportionate attacks” could be considered a “war crime”.
