REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir, said that Republic of Indonesia does not stand idly by and let the recent acts of violence in Gaza. The Indonesian government is pushing efforts to stop the escalation of violence in Palestine and avoid more civilian casualties.

“Indonesia does not stand still because from the beginning Indonesia continues to conduct informal consultations with various countries in the Security Council,” Arrmanatha said in an online media briefing by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia on Tuesday (25/10/2023).

He said Indonesia's informal consultations with various countries in the UN Security Council were conducted to encourage the UN Security Council to take ceasefire steps and provide access for humanitarian aid for the Palestinians.

“That's been done from the beginning,” he said.

Arrmanatha also claimed that he had directly spoken to permanent representatives of UN Security Council member states, including China, Japan, Malta, the United Kingdom and others to push for a settlement of the conflict in Gaza.

In addition, Indonesia also spoke with various committees at the UN General Assembly to raise and voice the situation in Gaza so that the issue gained attention.

“So we continue to push for this issue to gain political visibility, so that we try to prevent these countries in the United Nations from assuming that this issue in Gaza is not just in the Security Council,” he said.

“We are trying to raise this issue in all the discussions at the UN General Assembly in the various committees here. So, this is to provide “political visibility”,” he added.

The aim of all these efforts was to encourage UN contributions and enhance their role so that UN organisations could carry out aid in Gaza.

Meanwhile, in addition to continuing to push the UN Security Council member states, Indonesia also encouraged the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to ask the UN to hold a special session at the General Assembly to discuss a settlement of the conflict in Gaza.

Indonesia also rallied support from countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as well as other countries to push for the special session proposal, which was finally agreed by the president of the UN General Assembly to be held on 26 October 2023.
