Muhadjir said Indonesia as a country with a majority Muslim population has a rich and long tradition of Islamic boarding schools. The schools have become invaluable educational and character-building institutions.

At the boarding house, he said, santris learned not only Islam, but also the values of honesty, solidarity, and a sense of responsibility. All those values are a strong foundation in building a developed and prosperous society.

“My message to santris is to study and do not be tireless, because santris have excellence in terms of knowledge, piety, and morality. These three things will bring Indonesia forward in the future,” he said.

Earlier, Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) requested that the spirit of Santri Day always be upheld in accordance with the current context to deal with the economic, food and energy crisis in the world.

“The spirit of Santri Day must continue to be held firmly in accordance with the current context in which there is an economic crisis due to war,” Jokowi said in his speech during the apple of National Santri Day 2023 in Surabaya, East Java.

Jokowi explained that the current economic, food and energy crisis has the potential to inflame the world caused by wars in a number of countries. After the Ukraine-Russia wars, the world is now faced with geopolitical challenges that could impact the economy due to the Palestinian-Israeli wars.

“There is a food crisis due to war, there is an energy crisis due to war, both previously only one in Ukraine, now more in Palestine and Israel,” he said.
