REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) ordered National Police to investigate over allegedly violation against students who died while demonstrating in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi on Friday. He stressed the investigation is necessary considered that security forces were ordered to not carry weapons during the rally.
“I also ordered National police chief to investigate the entire ranks because as he told me that there was no order to carry weapons. So there would be further investigation,” said Jokowi on Friday.
Jokowi emphasized he has instructed National Police Chief Tito Karnavian to not take repressive measures while securing demonstration that carried out by students. He said the act was to channel aspirations and what the students did has been guaranteed and protected in the constitution.
“Once again, I have said no repressive measures in handling demonstrations because the mass was giving opinion and it was guaranteed by constitution,” Jokowi added.
Based on the report, the two students died after a demonstration in front of the provincial legislative council (DPRD) building descended into violence on Thursday (Sept 26) due to gunshot wounds. Nevertheless, Jokowi asked public to not suspect the cause of the death first.
“So don’t guess before the investigation is finished,” Jokowi said.
A student, identified as La Randi died after allegedly being shot. The-21-year-old man was brought to Dr. R. Ismoyo Hospital at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday (Sept 26) in a critical condition with a chest wound.
Another Halu Oleo University student, Laode Muhammad Yusuf Farwadi, underwent surgery at Bahteramas Hospital after he suffered severe head injuries. He was in a critical condition as of 7:50 p.m. on Thursday and died on Friday (Sept 27) morning.
