Wiranto bans mass mobilization during vote counting

Wiranto ordered security forces to crack down mass mobilization after the voting.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Wiranto banned mass mobilization during official vote counting by General Election Commission (KPU). He said the action has the potential to violate law because it disturbs public order. 

“There are plans after people cast their vote and quick count being held, there will be a victory march through mass mobilisation. We don’t recommend this because the chaotic consequences,” said Wiranto on Monday (April 15).

Wiranto asked all the campaign teams, election participants, and public to abandon intention of mass mobilization. He also ordered security forces at central and regional levels to crack down mass mobilization after the voting. 

Meanwhile, Wiranto explained about terms of mass mobilization in public, which no disturb public order. He said it should be within ethical and moral limits. 

“Also it doesn’t interfere with national unity,” Wiranto added. 

Nevertheless, Wiranto did not prohibit mass activities during the vote counting process at home. He said it is not prohibited if parties and people want to celebrate victory at their own homes or places. 

“If people want to do it at their own homes or their neighbour houses, yes they can, but if it is in a public places, it isn’t allowed,” Wiranto said. 

Indonesia’s 2019 election day will be held on April 17. People in the country will vote for country’s leaders and representatives for the next five years. The polling stations (TPS) will open at 7 a.m and close at 1 p.m.
