REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TAKALAR -- Vice presidential candidate Ma'ruf Amin has received the customary title of Karaeng Manaba. The customary title was given by the Karaeng Galesong Sultanate, during his visit to Balla Lompoa Palace in Galesong, Takalar District of South Sulawesi, on Wednesday.

"Today in my visit to Takalar District, I received the Karaeng Manaba customary title from Galesong Sultanate. Now, I am part of Takalar family, Karaeng Galesong family, and so all people here are my family," Amin stated.

He admitted that the title Karaeng Manaba, which means wise leader, has motivated him to become a truly wise leader.

"This title gives me motivation, encouragement, and the spirit. It inspires me to become a wise leader," the running mate of the incumbent presidential candidate Joko Widodo noted, adding that he would lead Indonesia toward peace and prosperity.

The title was awarded by a descendant of Karaeng Galesong, Takalar Sultanate Mallarangeng Abdullah Karaeng Gassing, who was accompanied by customary chief M. Roem Karaeng Mattawang. He remarked that Ma'ruf is an eligible figure to receive the title, ohis wisdom and experience in administration as well as religious life.

"We hope that if he is elected (as vice president), he would build and lead the nation toward a better future. That is the meaning of Karaeng Manaba," he added.

Mattawang cited the history of Karaeng Galesong's close relations with a Sultanate in Banten, who explained that the title awarded to Amin, who is a Bantenese, would revive the good relations between the two ethnic groups.
