REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Taiwan, through the Taipei Economic and Trade Office (TETO) in Indonesia, has extended US$500 thousand in assistance to help victims of the tsunami that struck Sunda Strait. TETO Chairman John C. Chen handed over the assistance to acting chief of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Ginandjar Kartasasmita at the PMI Office here on Tuesday.

Chen expressed hope that assistance from the government and people of Taiwan would be able to alleviate the financial burden of the tsunami victims. "The government and people of Taiwan offer condolences over the tsunami disaster in Sunda Strait," he noted.

The aid can be utilized to rebuild tsunami-hit areas in the provinces of Banten and Lampung and help the victims recover, he stated. Chen said Indonesia had borne witness to a series of earthquakes and tsunamis that claimed several lives and caused material losses last year, while the government and people of Taiwan experienced the same losses.

Earlier, Taiwan also donated US$250 thousand to the PMI for earthquake victims in Lombok Island and $1 million to the Indonesian Ulemas Council and PMI for tsunami victims in Central Sulawesi.

In addition, the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund cooperated with the World Vision and Mercy Corps in donating nearly $700 thousand to implement "the Livelihood Support Program in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia" and "WASH Assistance Program in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia" to rebuild disaster-hit areas.
