REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The sluggish global economy and fluctuations in prices of some commodities might hinder efforts to achieve the 2019 target of non-oil and gas export growth of 7.5 percent, Indonesia's Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) forecast. Some international institutions have forecast unfavorable global economic condition, especially with the sluggish economy in some export destination countries, BPS Chief Suhariyanto stated.

In addition, he said, fluctuations in the prices of some commodities, such as palm oil, rubber, and coal, were viewed as a challenge to the country to achieve its export target.

"There are price fluctuations that are not favorable. The oil price is also expected to decline further in addition to the plan to raise the interest rate," he remarked here on Tuesday.

However, he expressed optimism that the country would reach the target despite the challenges.

The Trade Ministry has set the export growth target at 7.5 percent in 2019, lower than the growth at 11 percent in 2018. According to Lukita, the target has taken into account the current global economic condition that has been overshadowed by the trade war.

"We have set the target at 7.5 percent, but we will discuss it further with other ministries," Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita remarked.
